Overcoming Disabilities with Technology

Learning Objective:
Identify and explain ways that science and technology influence the lives of people.

Teacher Directions:
Thanks to new technologies, many amputees or paraplegics can do any almost any activity, including mountain climbing. Scientists have developed prosthetic devices that actually have functions similar to real feet or legs.

One breakthrough in prosthetics is called the Luxon Max by Springlite. It is a prosthetic foot that functions like a real foot. It even absorbs shock before it is transmitted to the limb. It also allows a natural pivot motion. The Luxon Max is made of rubber, carbon fiber and plastic.

Another recently developed prosthetic foot is the Ohio Willow Wood Pathfinder Foot. It has a triangular design with lightweight heel and toe springs that give flexibility, comfort and stability.

Another new device allows a prosthetic knee to react differently to different terrains and speeds. There are even new technologies that can make prosthetic legs appear more real. PRS Thin Skin is a material that is put over prosthetic limbs that looks like skin.

How do these and other technologies influence the lives of people? Brainstorm every technology that you can think of that has helped people overcome disabilities. What human function does the technology assist? Can you think of ways that technology has impacted society?

Use the Chart*. In column one, write down examples of various technologies that you brainstormed. In column two, describe the human function the technology aids. In column three, describe at least two ways this technology has had a positive impact on society.

When concluded, discuss some obstacles people still have where technology could assist. Select one and use the Problem/Solution diagram* to identify the problem, brainstorm possible technological solutions, anticipate some possible results, and define an end result that would benefit society.
