Connecting to Visual Images

Learning Objective:
Connect information in text to information presented through visual images.

Teacher Directions:
Photos and other visual images can help you better understand stories, people, and places. There are many ways to use visual images to aid in your comprehension. Here are some ways:

  • Different Perspectives — Sometimes you can look at a photo or visual from multiple perspectives.
  • Compare and Contrast Similar Photos — Sometimes comparing two or more photos or images can help you see similarities and differences between stories, people or places.
  • Journal Photos — Sometimes photos or other visual images help you understand a journal, and sometimes information in a journal or caption helps you better understand the photo or visual image.
  • Photos or Images of People — Sometimes when you look for facial and hand expressions you can more easily determine action, meaning and feelings of people.
  • Using Other Visual Images — Sometimes maps, diagrams or drawings can provide information that a photo alone would not be able to communicate.

Let’s use the photos and visual images in the EverestQuest.com Web site to better understand the stories, people and places associated with this expedition.

  • First, look at the photo in the Photo Gallery of people loading a yak. Interpret the photo from the perspective of the expedition team. Then interpret the photo from the yakÕs point of view. (You could use the Chart*.)
  • Compare and contrast the photo of the expedition basecamp (with the tents) and the Buddhist Temple. Examine detail, colors, items, feelings, etcÉ(You could use the Chart* or the Venn* diagram.)
  • Look at the photo(s) that come with each journal. How does the photo help illustrate an event, a person or a place described in the journal? How do descriptions in the journal help you better understand the photo(s)? (You could use the Chart* for this activity.)
  • Take a look at any of the photos in the Photo Gallery of people doing something. Do you notice facial or hand gestures? How do you interpret those gestures? Do the gestures help you understand what is going on in the photo?
  • Take a look at all the maps and map drawings on the EverestQuest.com Web site. How do the maps or map drawings help you better understand the expedition?

Next, let’s make a list of photos or images we would like to see:

  • What other points of view would you like to see represented?
  • What other images or photos would help you compare and contrast stories, people and places associated with this expedition?
  • What other photos or images would you like to see in the journals?
  • What other activities and expressions of people would you like to see?
  • What other maps, diagrams or drawings would you like to see?

Feel free to add your ideas to one of the Discussion Groups.

Also, why not draw pictures of the visual images you would like to see.
