Comparing and Contrasting Journals

Learning Objective:
Compare and contrast the content and organization of selections.

Teacher Directions:
Journals #4 and #16 have very different styles and structures. Let’s compare and contrast these two journal entries.

Using the Chart*, let’s use column 1 to represent characteristics of Journal #4 and column 2 to represent characteristics of Journal #16.

For each of the following row heading categories, compare and contrast the two journals.

  • Use of Title — Are there any similarities in the purposes of the titles? Are there any differences in how the titles are used?
  • Writing Style — Are there any similarities in the writing style (conversational, feeling level, use of metaphors)? Are there any differences?
  • Detail and Descriptions — Are there any similarities to the level of detail and descriptions of people and events? Are there any differences in the level of detail and descriptions of people and events?
  • Use of Text Structures — Are there any similarities to the text structures (narratives, lists, poetry)? Are there any differences?

When completed, discuss the two journals. How do the similarities between the journals help you understand both the text and the author? How do the differences also help you better understand the text and the author?
