Text Structure

Learning Objective:
Identify text structures within nonfiction texts.

Teacher Directions:
On the EverestQuest.com Web site, you will find many different types of non-fiction text structures. Different text structures are used to more effectively communicate information, ideas, sequences of events and points of view.

Here are some text structures you will find on the EverestQuest.com Web site:

  • Journal
  • List
  • Chart/Table
  • Caption
  • Timeline
  • Plan
  • Discussion Message

Find an example of each. For each type, answer the following questions:

  • How is the text organized?
  • How does the organization of the text help you comprehend the selection?
  • What are the main points of the selection?
  • Could the text be organized in another way?

Now use each text structure to communicate something important about yourself.

  • Write a journal entry describing an important day in your life.
  • Make a list of things you had to bring on a trip.
  • Use a chart to communicate important information about yourself.
  • Bring in photos that are important to you and write captions.
  • Make a timeline of the important events in your life.
  • Write a plan for someone else explaining how to do something that you can do very well.
  • Write a message on one of the Discussion Groups sharing something important about yourself.
